My Grandma’s Depression-Era Trick for the Best Turkey Stuffing Is Pure Genius

Grandma Larson’s Turkey Stuffing Recipe

Thanksgiving is a cherished family tradition, and for many of us, that means gathering at Grandma’s house. My grandmother, Kathleen Larson, had a special gift for crafting meals filled with love, and her turkey stuffing is one of those timeless recipes that still warms my heart. Growing up in a farming family during the Great Depression, she perfected her stuffing recipe using simple, humble ingredients.

Ingredients

Quantity Ingredient
8 ounces Butter
2 cups Onions, sliced
2 cups Celery, sliced
1 pound Bread, stale or toasted
1 tablespoon Poultry seasoning
1 tablespoon Salt
½ teaspoon Black pepper
½ cup Parsley
3 Eggs

Directions

  1. Prepare the Bread
Submerge the stale or toasted loaf in water. Once soaked through, remove the bread and squeeze out excess water until fluffy.

  2. Cook the Vegetables
Melt butter in a medium pan over medium heat. Add celery and onions; cook until softened and translucent.

  3. Combine Ingredients
In a large mixing bowl, break apart the bread into small pieces. Add the butter, onions, and celery.

  4. Season
Add salt, pepper, poultry seasoning, parsley, and eggs to the bowl. Mix until well combined.

  5. Stuff the Turkey
Stuff the mixture into your turkey as desired.

Cook’s Note

If you prefer not to stuff your turkey, you can bake the stuffing in a casserole dish at 350°F (175°C) for about 30 minutes or until a digital thermometer inserted into the middle reaches 165°F (74°C).

This recipe keeps Grandma’s spirit alive and reminds us of the resourcefulness and creativity necessary to make something special, even during tough times. Enjoy this delicious turkey stuffing that is bound to become a favorite at your Thanksgiving table!
