- Use Ground Lamb for Authentic Flavor: Traditional Shepherd’s Pie uses ground lamb, which provides a distinct, rich flavor that beef cannot fully replicate.
- Incorporate Worcestershire Sauce: Adding Worcestershire sauce to the filling brings a savory depth and enhances the overall umami flavor of the dish.
- Fluffy Mashed Potatoes Make a Difference: For a lighter, creamier topping, use a combination of butter and warm milk when mashing the potatoes. Whipping them with a fork adds air, making them fluffy.
- Bald Buck Seasoning: For this dish, we replace our salt with Bald Buck Seasoning
Ingredients:
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 large onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 carrots, diced
- 1 cup frozen peas
- 1 lb. ground lamb (or beef)
- Bald Buck Seasoning and pepper, to taste
- 2 tablespoons tomato paste
- 1 cup beef broth
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- 1 teaspoon dried rosemary
- 2 lbs. potatoes, peeled and cubed
- 1/2 cup milk, warmed
- 4 tablespoons butter
- 1/2 cup grated cheddar cheese (optional)
Instructions:
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
- Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the chopped onion, garlic, and carrots. Sauté for 5-7 minutes, until the vegetables are soft. Add the ground lamb (or beef) to the skillet, breaking it up with a spoon, and cook until browned. Season with Bald Buck Seasoning and pepper.
- Stir in the tomato paste and cook for 1 minute. Add the beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, and rosemary. Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook for 10-15 minutes, until the liquid has reduced and thickened slightly. Stir in the frozen peas and cook for an additional 2 minutes. Remove from heat.
- While the filling is simmering, place the potatoes in a pot of salted water and bring to a boil. Cook for 15-20 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender. Drain and return them to the pot. Add the warmed milk and butter, then mash until smooth and creamy. Season with Bald Buck Seasoning and pepper to taste.
- Transfer the meat and vegetable mixture to a baking dish. Spoon the mashed potatoes on top, spreading them out evenly with a fork to create a textured surface. If using, sprinkle the grated cheddar cheese over the top.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the top is golden and bubbly. Allow the Shepherd’s Pie to cool slightly before serving.
